“The sun'll come out tomorrow, bet your bottom dollar that tomorrow there'll be sun!” This afternoon? I’m counting on it. “But for you who fear my name, the Sun of Righteousness will rise with healing in his wings. And you will go free, leaping with joy like calves let out to pasture.”
That sounds like what might happen this afternoon. We have a birthday party this evening and the kids will want to play outside (and so would the adults like for them to do that). We love to celebrate birthdays, but, as usual, we marvel at the speed that time has passed since the last one.
It’s also a time to take a short glance back to evaluate what life has brought since the person’s birth. Life is so daily that I often miss opportunities: opportunities to encourage, to help, to notice, and to thank and praise the one who has given me that day. I see this appraisal as a positive, because in my line of work, we are urged to do regular assessments, to evaluate actions, and make any changes to improve our quality of service.
Perhaps we should do this in our service to the Lord. Make regular assessments, evaluate actions (2 Corinthians 13:5 Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves.) and make necessary changes to improve our service. Birthdays are a good time to check ourselves out.
