“Every promise in the Book in mine; Every chapter every verse, every line; All the blessings of His love divine, Every promise in the Book in mine.”
Today I went on Live Search and keyed in the question, “How many books have been written?” It could not process the answer. It asked me if I meant how many books by certain authors, “How many books were written by Ellery Queen, Danielle Steel, or Shakespeare?” So, I googled the question. Google tried to answer the question by asking did I mean, “How many books were written about Jesus Christ, Abraham Lincoln, Barack Obama, or Ailuranthropy?” (I looked up that last one in the dictionary but couldn’t find it).
My point? A gazillion books have been written by people about people, places, things, and ideas. Many of them contradict each other, maybe because new truth has been discovered, and maybe because the authors just differ in their views. Some consider their works fiction and most of the others should. The second kind may think they have written truth or may mutter that there is no such thing as absolute truth and/or truth is relative.
Do medical books from 2009 agree with those written 1809? How can science books change when the universe stays about the same? (So, is Pluto a planet this year?) Does history change when the history books are re-written to accommodate political correctness? Furthermore, you can probably find some philosophy book to agree with about every idea ever thought. There are hundreds or thousands of self-help books, but the world doesn’t seem to have improved because of them.
It’s impressive to think that God wrote one book, and it has remained the same for thousands of years. While it has been translated a number of times into “common-use language,” the content has stayed the same. (Well there was that one that wanted to refer to God as “she”, but I don’t know what they did with the Trinity.) God’s one book contains more than all the rest; it covers history, medicine, science, astronomy, philosophy, self-help, and many other topics. Fortunately, it covers instructions and encouragement from the author. Most important, however, is that it contains truth.
The Bible has survived various world upheavals. Empires have risen and fallen. Wars have been fought. The planet has warmed and cooled. Pandemics have killed. Disasters have annihilated. Towers to human supremacy have been built and have crumbled. Rulers have ruled and all met the same ultimate fate. Ideas have come and gone like “new math” and another one has come to take its place for a while until another one and another one and another one. . .
The message in that one book has endured. Over the centuries and over the past few decades in our country, that one book has been outlawed, ridiculed, burned, ignored, replaced, and called everything from old fashioned to dangerous. Its followers have pretty much traveled the same path. The wise of this earth and of our land have deemed as fools those of us who choose to believe that one book. But in His book, God said, “Do you see a man wise in his own eyes? There is more hope for a fool than for him.” (I guess that means there is hope for us?)
